Our Humble Beginnings

Derby City Smokehouse was founded in 2010 by the Thompson family, passionate BBQ enthusiasts who wanted to bring authentic Texas-style smoked meats to Louisville. Starting with a small smoker in their backyard, the family perfected their recipes through years of trial and error.

What began as weekend cookouts for friends and family soon grew into a local sensation. The unique blend of traditional smoking techniques and innovative flavor profiles quickly earned us a loyal following.

Today, we continue to honor those humble beginnings by maintaining the same commitment to quality, passion for perfection, and dedication to our community that started it all.

2010

The Beginning

Founded as a family-run BBQ stand at local farmers markets. Started with just one smoker and three family recipes.

2012

First Brick & Mortar

Opened our first restaurant on 18th Street with 10 tables. Quickly became a local favorite for authentic smoked meats.

2015

Award Recognition

Won "Best Ribs in Louisville" award for the first time. Began expansion of our smoking facilities to meet growing demand.

2018

Major Expansion

Expanded restaurant seating to 75 tables and added outdoor patio. Launched catering services for events across Louisville.

2020

Pandemic Adaptation

Successfully pivoted to takeout and delivery during challenging times. Strengthened community bonds through meal donations.

2023

Current Day

Serving over 50,000 happy customers annually. Multiple award winner and recognized as Louisville's premier smokehouse.
